Frequently Asked Questions

Find any answers to questions you might have about the role, our company and our team.

What are your standard work hours?

We work a four day week so you do 4 longer days, 7am-5pm. You will then either have Friday or Monday off. All of the technicians rotate quarterly so that they have a mix of Fridays and Mondays off throughout the year.

Do I get a company vehicle?

Yes! All our technicians have brand new Renault vans which are fully kitted out with everything you need to get the job done. We also cover fuel, tolls and servicing.

What does a typical day look like?

No two days at Protex ever look the same and that’s exactly how we like it.

You’ll start your morning knowing exactly where you’re heading, with your jobs clearly scheduled in simPRO, a fully stocked company vehicle, and the support of a tight knit A-Team behind you. Whether you’re heading to a residential fault find on the North Shore, upgrading a switchboard in a commercial space, or completing a fitout for a new business, your day is always varied, hands-on, and engaging.

You’ll be solving real problems, working directly with customers, and taking pride in delivering high quality work. Some days you’ll be troubleshooting tricky faults, other days you’ll be completing planned maintenance, switchboard upgrades, or installing new fans, variety is guaranteed.

Throughout the day, you’ll be trusted to manage your time, make smart decisions, and do what you do best without micromanagement. You’ll have access to modern systems, clear processes, and a supportive office team that has your back whenever you need it.

You’ll wrap up the day knowing your work is valued, your effort is recognised, and you’re building real momentum in a growing business that invests in your skills, career, and wellbeing.

If you’re the kind of electrician who enjoys autonomy, variety, problem solving, and being part of a positive, high energy team  you’ll feel right at home here.

What type of clients will I be servicing

Our two key customer groups are property managers and facility managers. 80% of your work will be maintenance at residential and commercial properties. Then 20% will be a mix of small projects (such as a renovation or office fit) and larger EV projects for our sister company EV Installations.

What type of work will I be doing?

We do a mix of quoted, reactive and emergency work. Quoted works have an approved scope of work so you will know what is required before attending the job. These are things like switchboard upgrades, ligthing upgrades, appliance installations, fan installations, EV charger installations, and shop fit outs. Reactive work is then work that we get where we don't know the full scope of work and you have to turn up, diagnose the problem and fix it. This can be faulty lights, fittings, exhuast fans, power tripping, no hot water. We offer a 24/7 emergency service so have to attend jobs if they are deemed an emergency out of hours. We have an emergency roster between all the technicians. See below.

Will I have to do emergency work?

Yes, we have a rotating emergency roster where you are on call around every 5 weeks. This involves you being available after hours Monday - Sunday for that week. You will be a paid a standby fee of $50 and if an emergency job comes in you will be given a minimum call out of 4 hours, you will be paid for additional hours above that. While you are on call you are expected to have your vehicle and uniform with you and be sober. In the event that an emergency request comes in, the call will go through to the supervisor and they will screen the call to see if an attendance is required. If required, the supervisor will call you to advise the address, contact details, and nature of the emergency.

What experience do I need to have?

You need to have maintenance experience ideally in a residential or commercial setting. You need to be comfortable completing multiple jobs in a day and moving around. You have to love fault finding, thinking on your feet and problem solving. We find that people who thrive in this job love variety, love challenges and love doing something different every single day. If you're previous experience involves working at the same site every day or doing the same task every day (eg. cable pulling or installing lights) then this isn't the role for you.

What systems do you use?

We use simPRO for our job management system which houses everything you need for every job. Through the app you can access your schedule, see the job description, add job notes and photos and videos, add materials and add quoted work notes. We give you comprehensive training so that you are comfortable with the system.

What does the onboarding process look like?

We have a comprehensive onboarding process so that you feel completely comfortable when you attend your first job solo. Day 1 will be in the office with our Director Cam who will be taking you through our company values, systems and processes, leave request, sick leave, uniform etc. Basically all the backend admin things will be completed that day. You will also get your vehicle handed over. You will then be buddied up with a senior technician for the next two weeks who will show you the ropes. You will shadow them for the two weeks learning how simPRO works, how we manage jobs, our processes and procedures. You will then be sent out to your own jobs on week three with an open line to your training buddy at all times to aswer any questions you have. You will then get buddied up with your training buddy as and when you need it.

Who is in your team?

We have two directors at Protex, John and Cam. Cam manages all the backend operations for the business and the sales to new customers. John is an electrician by trade and is our Field General. He is the point of call for all our technicians, running daily morning calls to set you up for the days work, answering questions, helping with technical questions, assisting on challenging jobs, keeping a high quality of work throughout our business.

Amy is the General Manager and manages the recruitment, marketing and strategy for the business.

Demi is the Service Coordinator and manages all the scheduling and material ordering, you will work very closely with her.

Sean is our Quoting and Billing Officer and creates all the quotes for new works and invoices for completed works. You will work closely with him on jobs when you have questions about scope of work or when he has questions about works completed.

Our Accounting officer Rach works remotely in the Phillipines.

We then have a mix of 5 technicians in both Electrical and A/C.
